I have been a fan of horseracing since 2004. I adore it, front, back, upwards, backwards... You get the picture. :) When I saw the poster for it, I was totally stoked. There has yet to be a good movie about the son of Bold Ruler, so I was really hoping that this one would pull through.
I was unable to see this one in theaters, but when I did see it, shivers ran up and down my spine. The beginning was AMAZING. The quotations from Job totally fit. I had goosebumps, inside and out.
The main problem with the movie, though, is that it's not entirely accurate. The coin toss, yes, did happen. But there were actually three foals to choose from. The winner could choose either the filly out of Somethingroyal, or the colt out of Hasty Matelda and the unborn foal of Somethingroyal. As the movie says, hancock won the toss. He took the Somethingroyal filly, leaving Penny Chenery with the colt and the unborn foal.
You can probably guess who the unborn foal ended up being. :)
Who do you think got the better deal?
GOOD
The beginning, as I mentioned above, was amazing. It's my favorite part of the movie, followed closely by the scene where Secretariat won the Belmont. The whole movie was filmed brilliantly. Normally film makers don't film too much of the actual going-ons of the racetrack and when it comes to racetime, the jockey's are always riding fake horses when close up. While that might have been the case with this movie as well, it didn't show. I'm glad.
I loved every bit of this movie.
NEGATIVE
The thing I don't like about Secretariat is the lack of support from Penny's husband. He was a loser, from start to finish. Rather blunt, yes, but it's the truth. It was only when Bold Ruler's son started to actually win that he actually took interest in his wife's passion. It didn't tell the audience of the couple's outcome, because of it's Disney title, but Penny and her husband eventually got a divorce.
There might have been a couple cuss words, but I can't remember.
CONCLUSION
All in all, this was a superb movie. Watch it with the family! It dares you to become a fan of the Sport of Kings. :)
STARS: 5 out of 5
This is a video of Secretariat's legendary win... It's one thing to watch him win it in a Disney movie, but it's entirely different to watch the real thing. :)
YAY!
