Secretariat was one of the best horse movies I have ever seen. I can end this post right there and everyone will agree. (hopefully)
I have been a fan of horseracing since 2004. I adore it, front, back, upwards, backwards... You get the picture. :) When I saw the poster for it, I was totally stoked. There has yet to be a good movie about the son of Bold Ruler, so I was really hoping that this one would pull through.
I was unable to see this one in theaters, but when I did see it, shivers ran up and down my spine. The beginning was AMAZING. The quotations from Job totally fit. I had goosebumps, inside and out.
The main problem with the movie, though, is that it's not entirely accurate. The coin toss, yes, did happen. But there were actually three foals to choose from. The winner could choose either the filly out of Somethingroyal, or the colt out of Hasty Matelda and the unborn foal of Somethingroyal. As the movie says, hancock won the toss. He took the Somethingroyal filly, leaving Penny Chenery with the colt and the unborn foal.
You can probably guess who the unborn foal ended up being. :)
Who do you think got the better deal?
GOOD
The beginning, as I mentioned above, was amazing. It's my favorite part of the movie, followed closely by the scene where Secretariat won the Belmont. The whole movie was filmed brilliantly. Normally film makers don't film too much of the actual going-ons of the racetrack and when it comes to racetime, the jockey's are always riding fake horses when close up. While that might have been the case with this movie as well, it didn't show. I'm glad.
I loved every bit of this movie.
NEGATIVE
The thing I don't like about Secretariat is the lack of support from Penny's husband. He was a loser, from start to finish. Rather blunt, yes, but it's the truth. It was only when Bold Ruler's son started to actually win
that he actually took interest in his wife's passion. It didn't tell the audience of the couple's outcome, because of it's Disney title, but Penny and her husband eventually got a divorce.
There might have been a couple cuss words, but I can't remember.
CONCLUSION
All in all, this was a superb movie. Watch it with the family! It dares you to become a fan of the Sport of Kings. :)
STARS: 5 out of 5
This is a video of Secretariat's legendary win... It's one thing to watch him win it in a Disney movie, but it's entirely different to watch the real thing. :)
A couple weeks ago me and my sisters went to go see Thor. It's a hilarious story, actually. When we first saw the poster for Thor, I, for one, figured we wouldn't be seeing it. Mainly because of the "gods" theme. Thor is the god of thunder, and as a Christian, the only god there is is God himself. While the poster looked incredibly intriguing and cool, I exed it out of my mind. We wouldn't be seeing it. That was my thought about it for a while... Until Tory said she wanted to see a movie. But which one to see? I wondered this, because as far as I knew there wasn't anything good out. We'd already seen the "good ones". :) "Thor." she said. I was surprised, but she proceeded to tell me that Plugged-In had a good review for it. I looked it up, and found my opinion of it sky rocketing. So that's the movie we saw.
My Opinion
It was a very good movie, beginning with action and ending with action. The action itself was really well done and amazingly epic. The battle scene in the beginning was AWESOME! I was biting my nails the entire time. Literally. I loved how Thor regained his honor. It wasn't lame, it wasn't predictable. It was perfect. As a writer, I appreciate original plots. :)
Sif, the goddess of war
I loved all the characters. Darcy, Sif, Erik, Fandral, ect. Jane (Natalie Portman) was funny with her "Do me a favor and not be dead" line. However, she wasn't exactly a solid character. She wasn't "written" enough. Thor himself was HILARIOUS. I loved him a ton, and Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek) did an amazing acting job. "This drink... I like it! More!" Jane: What happened? Thor: He's fine! We drank, we fought- he did his ancestors proud! The romance, I thought, was very sweet. I really liked it, and Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth just look really cute together, too. ;)
Thor: Do you see her? Heimhall: Yes. Thor: How is she? Heimhall: She's searching for you. One word about Heimhall: one of THE BEST characters in Thor. He's totally awesome.
NEGATIVE
There really isn't anything negative about Thor, other than the whole "gods" thing, but even that didn't go into deep detail. I was surprised. If anyone has seen the movie "Tron", I'll say that the gods thing in that movie was worse than in Thor. Just my opinion, though. :) Jane and Thor kiss at the end. Shocker, I know. Thor goes shirtless once, showing his super buff frame. There's little language in this movie. But nothing terrible. I was pleasantly surprised. That's all the negativeness I have to say about the movie.
CONCLUSION
Heimhall
All in all, this was a very awesome movie. I enjoyed it a ton. And who knew I'd see it in theaters, either? Funny how things work out, huh? :) STARS: 5 out of 5
SYNOPSES
Thor begins as a rebellious "god". He's the heir to the throne of Asgarth. As a hot headed, reactionary Thor gets himself banished to Earth. I won't tell you how, or why, but he does. And to make matters worse, he doesn't have his immortal powers. He's a Mortal forever. Unless he can find the humility and honor he lacks.
Odin: Whoever wields this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.
My first introduction to True Grit came with John Wayne. That was the first version I saw of the movie, and I have to say, before I saw it I was like, "It's John Wayne! Of course it's going to be good." I was wrong. It wasthe worstJohn Wayne movie I had ever seen. Stupid, annoying, and just kind of rude, True Grit was instilled in my mind as a bad movie. So it's no surprise that when I saw the advertisement for the 2011 remake of True Grit, I automatically figured it would be a no-go. However, I still had a slightly open mind about it. I try to have an open mind about all movies, but I still keep it closed to filter out what shouldn't be considered a ."possible good movie". Despite that, though, True Grit was still at the back of my mind. Then it came to the post theater, and, being only four dollars, I said, "What the heck. It's only four dollars." With some friends and my sisters, we went and saw it. I was grasped into its plot the moment I saw the beginning. "You must pay for everything in this world, one way or another. There is nothing free except the grace of God."
MY OPINION
This was a VERY good movie. I loved it to pieces. Very well made, very well acted, very well plotted. Mattie was hilarious, as was Rooster and LaBoeuf.
"No ma'am, I ain't supposed to utter your name!"
Hailee Steinfeld (Mattie) did an AMAZING acting job. There was nothing about her that wasn't perfection. Although she didn't win any of them, Hailee was nominated for like 10 Grammy Awards. Why she didn't win any, I haven't the slightest idea. She'll be a big time actress, just wait and see. ;) There were great scenic images in True Grit as well. I'd have to say that True Grit was the best movie I've seen in theaters this year. Yeah, it was that good. :)
SYNOPSES
Mattie sets out to find Tom Chaney, the man who killed her father for two pieces of gold. She hires a liquor-loving marshal, leaving everything behind and heading into Indian territory. Joining them is a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf. "We have no rodeo clowns in Yell County."
GOOD
I really loved the gradual daughter-father relationship between Mattie and Rooster. Mattie starts out as just a little girl, but in the end, Rooster puts his life on the line for her. It was very nicely done; very sweet. "And 'futile', Marshal Cogburn, 'pursuit would be futile'? It's not spelled f-u-d-e-l." There was a lot of Biblical quotes in True Grit. The beginning quote: The wicked flee when none pursueth, was really awesome. I loved it. There's also an Old Testament tang to the rest of the movie. And it was just an amazing movie, through and through. :)
NEGATIVE
It starts with a hanging. You see a mans fingers get cut off (the most graphic scene). People get shot. People get killed. It's a western, what do you expect? ;P There is hardly any language in it, a few son of---, and supposedly there's an f-word somewhere in it. But I've seen it three times and have yet to catch it.
